A scaling or more commonly known as cleaning is a routinely performed procedure. It involves both a piezoelectric instrument and hand instruments to clean above and below the gum line to remove plaque and harder calculus deposits.
Dental Scaling & Root Planing
Scalings and in some instances root planing forms the basis to good oral health.
Root planing is a little more intricate using only hand instruments. Hard calculus deposits are removed along with the root surface. May sound painful, however, a local anesthetic is administered prior to the procedure making it much more comfortable for dentist and patient. Not all patients are candidates for root planings.
Scalings are performed every 6 monthly whereas Root Planings can be performed when required.
Usually one for scalings and two to three for root planings.
